Service Description

Somatic Experiencing® (SE) is a body-oriented approach to healing stress, trauma, and nervous system dysregulation developed by Peter A. Levine. Rather than focusing primarily on talking about past events, Somatic Experiencing helps people notice and work with the physical sensations, impulses, and nervous system responses that may remain in the body after overwhelming experiences. The approach is based on the understanding that trauma is not necessarily caused by the event itself, but by how the nervous system responds when it becomes overwhelmed and unable to complete its natural fight, flight, or freeze responses. How Does It Work? During a Somatic Experiencing session, attention is gently directed toward bodily sensations, emotions, movement impulses, breath, posture, and nervous system responses. * Develop awareness of physical sensations in the body * Recognise signs of activation, stress, or overwhelm * Build capacity to stay present with sensations without becoming flooded * Gradually release stored survival energy * Restore a sense of safety, regulation, and resilience Rather than revisiting traumatic memories in detail, the work often focuses on what is happening in the present moment within the body. What Can Somatic Experiencing Help With? Somatic Experiencing may support people experiencing: * Anxiety and chronic stress * Trauma and PTSD * Relationship difficulties * Chronic tension and pain * Emotional overwhelm * Grief and loss * Burnout and fatigue * Difficulty feeling safe, connected, or present * Sexual concerns where nervous system regulation is relevant What Happens in a Session? A session may include: * Guided awareness of bodily sensations * Tracking changes in breath, temperature, tension, or movement * Gentle movement or posture exploration * Resourcing exercises to build feelings of safety and stability * Learning to recognise and regulate nervous system states Clients remain fully clothed and in control throughout the process. The pace is intentionally slow and respectful of the nervous system's capacity. The Goal The goal of Somatic Experiencing is not to relive trauma but to help the nervous system complete interrupted survival responses and return to greater balance. As regulation increases, people often experience greater emotional resilience, improved relationships, increased capacity for pleasure and connection, and a deeper sense of wellbeing.
